DIY: Holiday Ornament

I received a gift this holiday season from my bestie and I think the idea is so cute I'd like to share it with you:

I grew up making painted ornaments for the holiday season with my mom for years. It's such an easy and inexpensive project. You can make SO MANY gifts for SO MANY different people for around $30: I've found that a pack of 24 clear ornament balls run around $10, various acrylic paint colors for around $15, and some ribbon for $5. From there, the possibilities are endless really.

When my sisters and I made them with my mom we kept it simple, used only paint and glitter.

Begin with these:
Glass ornaments with removable 'caps'.

Remember to pinch the 'hanger' part tightly together to remove the top. I've broken too many glass ornaments because I got a little over-zealous and just tried to rip the tops off. Oops.

From there - GO CRAZY! Add whatever color of paint you want to the inside of the balls. Maybe some glitter? Maybe some confetti sparkles? Experiment on a couple to figure out just what looks the best to you. I recommend adding a little bit of white paint to each ornament - it's a hue that will obviously mix well with everything and end up giving you a bunch of different shades of whatever colors you added.

Then do this:
Upside down on a Dixie cup.

Allowing for your ornament to dry upside down,
with the top still off, and on top of a little Dixie cup will ensure that your craft dries evenly and doesn't create a mess. Drying your ball upside down will keep all of the excess paint from gathering at the bottom of your ornament.

If you're feeling ambitions - once the ornaments are dry on the inside...why not add some puff paint to the outside of them? A little three dimension? Why not?!

So, here's what Molly did for me that I thought was so wonderful and just perfect. I was just married in October and she took one of my wedding invites, cut it into small strips and turned them into little spirals. She then put those spirals into the inside of my ornament. Finally, she added glitter paint snowflakes to the outside and tied a red ribbon to the top for hanging. I love it and my new husband and I will cherish it forever. <3
