DIY: Frayed Shorts

The look of distressed and frayed shorts has exploded in the last couple of summers.
This year, the high-waisted trend is still going strong and you'll even see a combination of the two. High-waisted frayed shorts. J states in her blog HERE, and I totally agree, that "...if you want to change something about an item than you probably shouldn't buy it." But she made an exception with these shorts and we agree! Thrift a little if you're worried about messing up on your first try and don't want to ruin a brand new pair of shorts. The shorts used in her blog are from Kohl's and were right around $20 new.

Notice she chose a pair of shorts that has a roll to the bottom of them. You'll need this sort of hem because it is fool proof when you're cutting your shorts to help them fray. Here are your easy steps!:

1. Carefully cut the threads holding the rolled hems in place.
2. Carefully cut the seam off along the bottom of the shorts. On these shorts that wound up being about a 1/4 inch, and following the seam line made it easy to ensure that the shorts didn't wind up lopsided.
3. Throw them in the washer and dryer.
4. When you pull them out, you'll have a perfect "fray." Cut off any long pieces and you are ready to rock!

Sometimes the best way to make something work for you is by adding a little elbow grease and making it yourself! With all of this rain lately, what are you doing to stay busy? This is a great idea to occupy some time between afternoon showers.
