School bells are right around the corner and with the ring comes the welcome of Fall. Fall is my favorite season for many reasons. Likely the most stand-out being layering (clothing). I believe that Fall lends the most freedom of fashion to people. With temperatures in the morning in the brisk 50s and still climbing into the 70s by afternoon, we see a wide range of style and I find that to be very exciting. Chilly mornings and seemingly over-air conditioned brick buildings call for tights and sweaters.
Enter: the skater skirt. One of fashion's most versatile pieces that is flattering on all body shapes. The skater skirt is a true staple in my wardrobe and can be worn so many ways with so many pieces that it should be a staple in your wardrobe as well.
A skater skirt, by definition, is a skirt that is fitted at the waist and flares into an a-line silhouette and away from your hips and thighs. Not all are equal, however, so let's break down four of the most popular variations:
1. Circle/Flippy: Perhaps the most popular. You will notice that this type of skater is generally lightweight; made of jersey or knit and the least formal of them all. Because they tend to be lightweight, avoid this style on a windy day. :)
2. The Classic: Simple, basic, less dramatic and streamlined.
3. Preppy Schoolgirl: Pleats that are heavy and noticeable. Best on ladies that are less hippy as this style will draw attention to that area specifically. Preppy and pretty.
4. Teenie Pleats: Generally chiffon or a light dainty fabric. Feminine and simple, pretty.
Breaking Down the Basics: When you have chosen the skater skirt that works best for you, here are some outfit inspirations. Pictured is a nice and simple black skirt - wearable with almost anything.

A little sweet and a little spicy. An outfit like this holds just the right amount of femininity but the leather jacket adds an edge that I love. Your accessories will finish up this outfit and give you that PUNCH of color that is otherwise absent when wearing all black. That lace crop-top would also be fabulous in a different color. Mustard yellow. (Don't even get me started on my obsession for Fall colors: burgundy, navy, mustard and olive. They tug on my heartstrings.)

There's a good chance that at some point you'll have something to dress up for. Or, if you're like me, you enjoy dressing up without an occasion. Put a blazer on it. This outfit would otherwise just be a skirt and a t-shirt but the addition of a blazer in a bright color brings an element of sophistication. Daytime meeting? No problem. Choose black or nude flats instead of those heels. Not to mention this outfit would be wonderfully easy to transition from day to night. Particularly chilly night? I'm seeing burgundy tights in your future.

I think this outfit is adorable. There's a big trend for this fall that includes the addition of a simple collared tank underneath chunky sweaters. After school gets out, you can easily remove your sweater and have the perfect outfit that has adjusted with the temperature of the day. There is nothing more comfy or practical than a basic black skirt and a cozy sweater. As the months get cooler, add a pair of tights to this look and some combat boots.

Cardigans, plaid & boots OH MY. I've always been a supporter of mixing neutrals and this outfit illustrates that well. Who was the one that said you can't wear brown boots with your black bottom anywho? I see myself wearing this once September/October rolls around and find it equally as useful into the Winter months with the addition of some fleece-lined leggings or sweater tights. Switch out the ankle boots for your favorite pair of knee-high boots.
Don't lose sight of summer just yet. You know we will have that week in October where it feels like June. In the meantime, add some pieces like the ones featured to bring your wardrobe to the perfect transition state. Skater skirt, cardigan, tights. Begin with those and expand thereafter. What is the ONE item that you keep in your closet year round? Mine is my white chiffon oxford.
