Women in Our Community: Amy O'Connor Hoback

It's my favorite time of the month. There is nothing better than featuring some of the women we love in our community right here on our own blog. This one hits closely to me - Amy has been a role model for me for years and I value her personal success and her friendship on the same level. We share a very similar personality: loving, fun, exceptionally sarcastic all while maintaining a heavy-heart and unshifting work ethic. Exclaimer: this woman uses a lot of exclamation points...I love it.

You already know I love you (insert silly fan-girling statement from the introduction), but let's take a moment to introduce the blog world to you and your business(es):

My name is Amy Hoback. I started Kleenrite Company in August of 2008 and I started my Yoli business in September of 2013. I am a self-motivated, driven uber positive woman that truly believes the only thing to ever get in anyone’s way of success is (our)self. I was raised in a family with a entrepreneurial spirit and parents who told me I could do and be anything I set my mind to because I am smart enough, classy enough, pretty enough and gosh darn it, people like me (a little Stuart Smalley just for you Becky). <---I'm leaving that out-take in here because I love it, thanks Amy.

What made you want to begin your business(es) in our community?

Family. Sioux Falls is home to almost my entire family. Coming home after being away for 13 years was a breath of fresh air. It wasn’t until I started getting involved in our community, more specifically the business community, did I realize what an unbelievable gem Sioux Falls is. The way people are driven by relationship building first and product second is amazing and inspiring to me. You really get to know people’s passions and hearts. It makes for a beautiful foundation of living.

You are a well known face in DTSF, involved in the Chamber and many other social events, etc. in and around the Sioux Falls area. You have to keep a fire lit under you. What are the top five things that inspire you?

Ooooo, top five things to spark my creativity.

  1. *People, I love love love to know the stories behind the smiles and what makes people tick!!!
  2. *Falls Park. I find, no matter the season, such peace just going and sitting by the peace of the water.  I will sit and pray, or just reflect on what is going on in my life at the moment.
  3. *FOOD!!! Ok, that may sound weird but I get so excited about food!!!! In downtown Sioux Falls we have some of the most amazing restaurants to enjoy!!! It makes me go home and want to be a better cook (or have my husband make it, LOL) for my kids!!! To share culinary joy is to share love ☺.
  4. *Our growing culture. In the past six months I have had the pleasure of walking downtown and hearing people sing on the side of the road unashamed and sharing with the world their God given talent!! Gives me goose bumps and makes ME want to learn an instrument. I LOVE THAT!!
  5. *Legacy. May sound strange but let me explain: As I drive throughout our city every day I see such amazing things happening. It makes me want to be better, do better and give more. My family has deep roots in Sioux Falls and I pray to continue that legacy with my children, to leave behind a mark on a community that makes your children and grandchildren proud of what you have given back and want to stick around and continue to grow such an amazing community.(...that answer alone...I mean, this woman.)

Tim and I have been married for 19 years, June 10, 1995 was the big day.  We have  four kids; Connor-17, Nolan-15, Kylie-13 and Megan-10. This mix of our family totally exemplifies Forest Gump's quote about a box of chocolates!  From day to day you never know what you're gonna get…..but it’s always (for the most part) sweet!!

Being in our city, what are a couple of things that you are most excited about - developmentally? Especially in regards to the massive changes within the last 10 years.

The improvements our city is making regarding our amenities is so exciting!! We have an events center now!!! Whoohoo. Big name entertainment will finally get to see what this little big city is all about!! We will get to show off!!  Indoor water center!  How amazing!!! And last but not least, an indoor tennis facility! We are so blessed here!

What do we, as a Sioux Falls community, bring to the table to help you excel in your work?

Open arms. That is what this community brings to the table!! Because of that, my business thrives! I feel very comfortable being a part of this community. I don’t feel like we have a “clicky” city. If people feel that way maybe you need to ask yourself, “When was the last time I truly put my self out there to meet someone new?”

Tell us a little bit about Yoli. What is it? Why should women be interested in it? How does it work for you?

Yoli!!! Oh, how I love thee ☺.  Yoli is a health and wellness system that focuses on optimal health.  Many people ask what it means; it’s Aztec for “Live Well”. Its focus is proper nutrition and supplementation. It is NOT a diet; it’s a life style. I got involved last year because I had no energy and was not sleeping well. I also had some food/tummy issues. Long story short, Yoli helped me through all of those issues and I haven’t felt this good since my early 20s!! I am happy to share my story to anyone who feels like they could use a boost in their health ☺.

I am 24 and you are three times more active than I am. You are a little running machine and should be so proud of that! Why do you feel self-confidence is important to women?

This answer runs along with #6. I just turned 41 years old and finished my first half marathon at the beginning of September. If you would have asked me, even a couple years ago, if I would ever consider running a half marathon I would have laughed you out of your shoes.  Health and fitness is not about being a size two and 5’9”. It is about feeling confident in your own skin and the shape God gave us!  Self-confidence is imperative in being able to give our best to the world! When we feel our best we can give our best. So many times we are raised with the mentality that everyone else comes first; husbands, children, parents, friends, etc. In reality, that is all backwards, we need to take care of ourselves FIRST!! When our emotional cup is full we can, in turn, give the world our best.

How do you feel like you separate yourself from other business women in our community in the same field?

I separate myself from other businesswomen by being me, whether they are in my field or not. I have been through enough interesting things in my short 41 years to realize that being “me” is good enough.

Maybe we'll have a couple light-hearted questions now. Like, Amy in jammies at the end of a long day:

How would you describe your own personal style?

Eclectic yet classic. I love to mix and match my wardrobe so I will buy a lot of classic pieces from different designers so I can have a multitude of outfits with fewer pieces.

What are five essentials in your closet?

Top five essentials in my closet:
A beautiful hand bag that is not too trendy
A really hot pair of red shoes
A nice pair of “good butt jeans”  I have a little junk in my trunk so finding a great pair of jeans is hard.  So when I find them I am a happy girl!!!!!
Boyfriend style cardigan.  LOVE!
A beautiful scarf... or twelve.

Reach into your purse, what are the five things you'll pull out before anything else?

Five things in my purse:
1) wallet
2) cell phone
3) mini makeup bag
4) pens!!!
5) reading glasses (yes, reading glasses but they are cute!)

Do you have a fashion icon? Or, someone you base your style off of?

I don’t really have a fashion icon. I just know what I like and Chelsea helps me figure out if it will fit my shape or not!!! I love lots of different looks but some don’t love my shape ☺. <-- well if that wasn't just the best answer ever. ;)

On a casual note, where do you see yourself and your businesses in five years?

In five years I see Kleenrite being the premiere cleaning company in Sioux Falls. We have had amazing growth in the last six years and I don’t see that slowing down.  As far as Yoli is concerned, I see an amazing future in that as well. People are literally starving for better health in this country. Our American diet is killing us…there is a better way!! Yoli is an amazing tool to help us all obtain better health.

Our little fluff ball Oliver came to live with us 3 1/2 years ago
