Singles Awareness Day

What is Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, you and your lady friends are encouraged to leave your husbands and boyfriends at home and just kick it-- breakfast style. It’s a day of ladies celebrating ladies. Like Lilith Fair, minus the angst.

But (!) there’s more.
Instead of just celebrating your gals, especially if you’re single, there’s another day, specifically set aside to celebrate your single-ness.
February 15.
In response to the huge push by retailers, corporations, and mass media it seems imperative for us to buy all of the candy, flowers and greeting cards the day after Valentine’s Day. Right?
Right.

February 15 has been declared Singles Awareness Day, which is basically the day that all of the single people can proudly stand up and show that it is absolutely okay to be single. And it’s also the day all of the leftover chocolate goes on sale.
Sure, some people would prefer to have their February celebration on the 14th, but the rest of us (ahem, me included) appreciate a much-needed break from the commercialism.
The goal of Singles Awareness Day is to let singles have celebrations, get-togethers, etc. and to exchange gifts with their single friends.

*This day was established by single people who were sick of feeling left out on Valentine's Day, and support of the day is growing every year.
I’ve been in this seat far too many times. And at first, it felt like a slap in the face each year. I’d watch the calendar with an eyebrow raised, skeptical and nervous about the dreaded question, “What are you doing for Valentine’s Day?”
But then Singles Awareness Day came up. And I kind of love it.
My suggested activities for this day (and the ones I’ll most likely participate in) are sending yourself flowers, getting drinks with girlfriends and ordering a gluten-free pizza to be delivered precisely as I get to my door after a long night out. Because let’s be real: there’s nothing wrong with being single. I don’t care if you’re 17, 27, or 70.

And if you are happy to be single, than February 15 is your day to tell the world. Hopefully not as obnoxiously as the people who tell the world they’re not single on Valentine’s Day, but it’s your day. Buy yourself flowers. Make yourself breakfast. Order a pizza. Or cake! Don’t wear pants. It’s your celebration. Do with it what you will.

The date is approaching quickly, so start planning your party right now!
